Autumn From My Window

22 Nov

For almost a month, I’ve been taking photos of the view from my office window as the seasons ebb from late summer to autumn. The colors burst into lively flame as the air cools and the sky grows dim. And then, they’re gone.

The pictures were taken from the same spot in the cross-hairs of a window pane with my semi-functioning iPhone 4. Hopefully I’ll have time to do this again when those verdant green shrubs at the bottom of the photos are overcome with pink azalea blooms.

Burning the Old Year
By Naomi Shihab Nye

Letters swallow themselves in seconds.
Notes friends tied to the doorknob,
transparent scarlet paper,
sizzle like moth wings,
marry the air.

So much of any year is flammable,
lists of vegetables, partial poems.
Orange swirling flame of days,
so little is a stone.

Where there was something and suddenly isn’t,
an absence shouts, celebrates, leaves a space.
I begin again with the smallest numbers.

Quick dance, shuffle of losses and leaves,
only the things I didn’t do
crackle after the blazing dies.
